Actress Maribel Verdú defends the legality of her real estate assets and reminds us that she has been contributing for three decades. Her statements on housing and taxation are once again in the spotlight.
The actress Maribel Verdú, aged 56, has claimed the legality of her real estate assets in an interview with Diario Sur in 2013, as noted by as.com. In it, the Madrid-born performer responded to criticism for owning several properties: "I have three flats, yes, but I have been working for 30 years. And I have nothing else."
Verdú insisted that all her assets come from her professional activity in film, theatre and television. "Everything I have earned from making films, theatre and television. I haven't stolen from anyone and I have declared everything to the tax office," she added. The actress also emphasised the impossibility of hiding income in her sector: "We, the actors, really can't deceive; a producer comes, pays you, and that's it."
"My friends, people around me, my two own sisters have been or are unemployed. And I see how they are coping"
The performer described herself as "privileged" and compared her situation to that of people in her circle who are facing employment difficulties. In the same conversation, Verdú defended her commitment to social causes: "I have always supported and been involved in associations for abused women. What happens? Just because my husband doesn't hit me, I can't defend them? Can't I do it because I'm not mutilated?".
The actress's statements reignite the debate on housing and the taxation of income in the cultural sector, an issue that continues to generate headlines more than a decade later.
