The cost of housing drives 16,195 workers in the Balearics into poverty, according to a report by Oxfam Intermón. The labour poverty rate rises by almost three points after accounting for housing costs.
According to Crónica Balear, the cost of housing places 16,195 workers in the Balearic Islands in a state of poverty. This figure appears in a report by the NGO Oxfam Intermón, released this Tuesday.
The study, titled "When working is not enough: the impact of housing costs on labour poverty", indicates that the poverty rate in the archipelago is 6.12% before considering housing expenses. After accounting for these costs, the figure rises to 8.84%, an increase of 2.72 points.
The greatest impact is recorded among those living in market-rate rentals. In that group, the labour poverty rate rises from 7.32% to 17.31%, an increase of 9.99 points.
Among homeowners with a mortgage, the rate increases from 2.64% to 3.26%, 0.62 points more. Only the group of homeowners without a mortgage sees an improvement, with their rate decreasing from 7.11% to 6.91%, 0.20 points less.
The NGO warns that the sample from the Balearics, drawn from the Living Conditions Survey, is insufficient. For this reason, it urges that the results be taken as indicative only and not to draw definitive conclusions from them.
Across Spain as a whole, the report estimates that around 770,000 workers fall into poverty after paying for housing. Before this expense, 11.48% of state workers, around 2.2 million, were already in a state of poverty. With housing costs included, the total figure approaches 3 million and the national rate reaches 15.49%, over 4 points higher.
