Finance Minister Arcadi España warns that questioning postal voting 'benefits no one' and emphasizes that the Spanish electoral system is guaranteed by thousands of officials.

Finance Minister, Arcadi España, defended the strength of the Spanish electoral system on Wednesday and warned that doubting postal voting 'benefits no one'. He made this statement during a press conference in Ceuta, after the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, and the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, encouraged in-person voting on Monday and questioned postal voting ahead of the upcoming elections on 29 November, as reported by pressdigital.es.

'Spain has a strong electoral system, guaranteed by thousands of officials who do their job magnificently, with the highest democratic standards in our European environment. I believe that questioning the procedure benefits no one and certainly does not benefit democracy,' the minister stated.

The Finance Minister expressed his 'concern' over the statements made by Abascal and Ayuso, and stated that 'it is difficult to differentiate between Vox and the Popular Party', which he considers 'not only a political party problem but a country problem'.

'I belong to a left-wing and progressive party, but I have always believed that it is necessary to have a conservative and right-wing party, as there are different ideological spheres in a democracy that are healthy. The difficulty we have in this country is that the more centrist right, if that word can still be used, has practically merged with the far right,' España argued.

The minister insisted that it is in 'attitudes, gestures, and policies' where it is 'difficult' to distinguish Vox from the Popular Party. 'I think we need to be aware of that problem and it should lead to some reflection,' he concluded.

Citizens can request postal voting from this Tuesday, following the publication of the electoral call in the BOE. The general elections will be held on 29 November.
