Former Labour Minister Fátima Báñez has died in a train accident that occurred near Toledo. She was 59 years old and was the author of the 2012 labour reform.
According to El Periódico, Fátima Báñez has died in the railway accident between two trains that occurred near Toledo. The spokesperson for the PP, Borja Sémper, confirmed this Thursday the death of the person who was until now the president of the party's foundation, a position she assumed in July 2020.
Báñez was Minister of Labour during the two legislatures of Mariano Rajoy and the first woman to hold that position since the restoration of democracy. A native of San Juan del Puerto (Huelva), she was 59 years old. Between 2000 and 2019, she was a deputy in Congress for the PP.
During her tenure, she promoted the 2012 labour reform, which made dismissals cheaper, facilitated the suspension of agreements, and eliminated the ultra-activity of agreements. This law provoked two general strikes called by CCOO and UGT that same year. When she took office in 2011, the unemployment rate was 21.2%, peaking in the first quarter of 2013 at 27%.
After leaving politics, she was part of the board of directors of Iberdrola in Mexico and was linked to Laboratorios Rovi and the law firm Sagardoy.
