Alberto Núñez Feijóo will defend Pablo Hernández de Cos's candidacy for the presidency of the European Central Bank in Brussels this Thursday. The Government is also working to secure the appointment.

According to La Razón, the president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will meet this Thursday in Brussels with the leaders of the European People's Party (EPP) to support the candidacy of Pablo Hernández de Cos for the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB).

De Cos is a former governor of the Bank of Spain and the current director of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Feijóo will argue that the candidate

“would be able to guarantee the solvency and credibility of the euro at a key moment for the future of all”

The meeting takes place ahead of the European Council and will include the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, states that the Government is actively working on the appointment. In statements to RNE, he speaks of an

“excellent window of opportunity”

for Spain. Cuerpo argues that it is time for the country to assume a position of this calibre on the ECB Governing Council, a role that has never been held by a Spanish representative. Lagarde's term ends in a year, and Italy, France, or the Netherlands have already held that presidency.

De Cos holds a degree in Economic and Business Sciences from CUNEF, a law degree from UNED, and a doctorate in Economics from the Complutense University of Madrid. As governor of the Bank of Spain, he was part of the ECB Governing Council and the management of the Basel Banking Supervision Committee, before taking up his current position at the BIS.
