The president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, criticises the Government for promoting an increase in the interprofessional minimum wage during the electoral period. The criticism was made at an event held at the employers' association headquarters.

According to diarioenpositivo.com, Antonio Garamendi, president of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE), believes that the Government is acting incomprehensibly by pushing for an increase in the interprofessional minimum wage (SMI) during the electoral period. He expressed this at an event held at the CEOE headquarters.

“incredible”

Garamendi criticised that the Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, cited minimum wage experts who, according to him, lack work experience. He also pointed out that the unions are demanding a 7% increase along with the application of absorption, and he disagreed with the idea that companies should cover public functions without receiving the price de-indexation they are asking for.

Regarding the labour market, Garamendi placed absenteeism among the concerns of companies and mentioned the lack of workers in the hospitality sector, a problem he described as very complex to manage. He also recalled that, despite the reduction in energy taxes, state revenue has increased.

José María Figaredo, head of the Economic Office of Vox, stated in a debate held at the CEOE that half of the legal non-EU foreigners in Spain are not working, according to their data. He described the regulation of labour absenteeism as complex and said that the disincentives to work are “brutal”.

For the PSOE, spokesperson Alberto Mayoral highlighted the importance of the migrant population for the daily functioning of many companies. He added that, in addition to absenteeism, unpaid overtime must also be addressed.

From the Popular Group, José Vicente Marí Bosó criticised the Government's triumphalism and proposed clarifying the regulation of essential services and modifying the laws on de-indexation and contracts. He also suggested focusing efforts on raising the average salary to 50,000 euros in the coming years, rather than just limiting it to the minimum wage.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Professional Association of Cleaning Companies (Aspel), its president, Juan Ignacio Beltrán, warned about absenteeism, changes in labour regulations, and intrusiveness in the sector, and called for strengthening social dialogue. The employers' association requested updating contracts, resuming mutual agreement extensions, and prioritising quality over price in contracting.
