The Government has approved the new University Student Statute, which replaces the 2010 version and includes, among other rights, work-life balance, scholarships that consider housing costs, and the right to academic leave. This is reported by infobae.com in its coverage of the text.

The document has been agreed upon with the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), the State University Student Council (Ceune), and the Coordinating Body of Representatives of Public Universities (Creup).

Universities must facilitate and promote housing under dignified and sufficient conditions for their students, with appropriate prices, and are obliged to inform about available options, both their own and those arranged, as well as housing pools in the city or nearby towns. Scholarship programmes will progressively take into account the cost of accommodation when studies involve residential mobility, along with the socioeconomic situation.

Academic leave or strike, total or partial, is recognised as a right. Universities must regulate how to exercise it with the participation of student representation, respecting the right to education.

Regarding work-life balance, all universities must develop general plans for both in-person and hybrid or virtual teaching. Exam schedules will consider whether the student is studying full-time or part-time, and students will be able to reschedule the date and time of their exams and justify absence from class in cases such as caring for dependents or the death or serious illness of a close family member.

Universities must offer psychological support, have specific units, and establish a protocol for action, prevention, and intervention in cases of suicidal behaviour, harassment, or cyberbullying. They will also need to adapt study plans, evaluation, internships, and mobility for students with disabilities or specific educational support needs.

The text also adds the right to receive advice on job placement, the portability of scholarships from national calls throughout the territory, and the recognition of up to 6 ECTS credits for activities related to social participation, development cooperation, sustainability, or cultural and artistic pursuits. External internships will be regulated through agreements with companies and institutions, which may include compensation for certain expenses.
