The union demands measures against temporality after unemployment rose by 1.85% in September in the region, with 1,120 more unemployed, while affiliation to Social Security fell by 1.12%.
Registered unemployment in Extremadura rose by 1,120 people during September, an increase of 1.85% compared to the previous month, according to data released by CCOO Extremadura, which attributes this spike to the reliance on seasonal activities. The number of unemployed is nearing 62,000, of which 64% are women, as reported by regiondigital.com.
The union's Secretary of Training and Employment, Mari Cruz Lara, has stated that this data confirms that the Extremaduran economy "depends on seasonal activities." Therefore, CCOO demands measures that "promote stable and quality employment," salary increases that maintain purchasing power, and actions to facilitate access to affordable housing, in addition to a productive transformation that generates opportunities throughout the year.
"It is common that, after summer, the end of some seasonal activities causes an increase in unemployment"
The increase in unemployment in the region exceeds that recorded in the same month of the previous year (+0.34%) and also the national average, where unemployment grew by 23,587 people (+1%), reaching a total of 2,379,505.
By gender, unemployment increased by 807 women (+2.07%) and 313 men (+1.44%). In total, there are 39,764 women unemployed compared to 22,043 men.
The Services sector concentrated the largest increase in unemployed, with 1,093 more, followed by Agriculture, with 183. In Industry, the number of unemployed is 154, but it registers the highest relative growth, at 5.1% compared to the previous month, particularly impacting the food industry (+13%). Construction, on the other hand, slightly reduced the number of unemployed by 27.
CCOO explains that the end of seasonal activities is compounded by the termination of contracts in the Public Administration, with a particular impact on health activities (+9.6%) and residential care services (+15%).
In year-on-year terms, unemployment fell by 3,370 people (-5.17%), marking the fifth consecutive month of deceleration in the rate of reduction. The decline was greater among women (-8.80%, 2,447 fewer) than among men (-4.02%).
