The singer Miguel Ríos, 82, advocates in a television interview for tax rates of up to 55% on his income and criticises wealth accumulation: 'If a guy has a lot, it's because another has very little.'

The singer Miguel Ríos, 82, has defended the payment of high taxes on high incomes in an interview with journalist Gonzo for the programme 'Salvados', on La Sexta, as reported by heraldo.es. In the conversation, the Andalusian artist asserts that he finds it fair for the tax office to withhold more than half of his annual income.

'I think it's fair that if I earn a fortune in a year, they take 52% or 55%, which we end up paying. Because there need to be roads and there need to be hospitals,' Ríos states in the interview. The singer argues that this money is used to finance infrastructure and public services.

Ríos recalls a conversation with former Prime Minister Felipe González in which he advised him: 'Miguel, the most practical thing is to think that you've earned half of what you've earned.' The musician responds that he accepted the advice.

The performer of 'El himno a la alegría' explains that he has never had 'grandiose dreams' and that he did not want to move to a better house than the one he had. 'I didn't want to be the richest in the cemetery. I was a guy from the street,' he points out. He adds that he has always been aware of the social stratum he comes from and that it makes him uncomfortable to separate from it.

In the same vein, Ríos states: 'From a very young age, I realised that I was uncomfortable with the rich. If a guy has a lot, it's because another has very little.' With these statements, the singer speaks out on the tax debate in Spain from his personal experience.

Miguel Ríos continues his musical activity at the age of 82. In 2026, he has concerts planned in Tenerife, Oviedo, and Madrid, according to the same information.
