Aena has awarded €19,562,849.89 for the regeneration of the runway at Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport. The work will last about twenty months and will require the runway to be closed for 21 days in May 2027.
The regeneration of the runway at Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén now has a contractor: the joint venture formed by Matias Arrom Bibiloni (MAB) and Sampol, for €19,562,849.89. According to moncloa.com, the work will last about twenty months and will require the runway to be closed for 21 days in May 2027.
Aena describes the intervention as a complex engineering project. It includes the removal of the current pavement and the application of a new one on the runway and its margins, with 2.5 centimetres more thickness, as well as the regeneration of the taxiways.
At the heads, the rigid pavement will be demolished to reconstruct it with flexible pavement. The project also enables a new aerial taxiway for helicopters and replaces all surface aeronautical lighting with LED fixtures, which have much lower energy consumption.
Most of the work will be done at night, between 23:15 and 06:30 hours, to minimise disruption to operations. The most sensitive areas, such as the heads, will require the total closure of the runway for 21 days, from 23:15 hours on 5 May 2027 to 06:30 hours on 27 May 2027, depending on how the work progresses.
During this period, flights will operate from Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, designated as an alternative. Aena has informed airlines and companies operating at the facility to reschedule their flights, and the work will progress 24 hours a day during those three weeks.
For travellers from Granada and Jaén, the practical information is the schedule: those planning to fly between 5 and 27 May 2027 will have to do so from Málaga. Once the runway is reopened, only work that can be scheduled at night without affecting flights will remain.
