Carrefour is analysing a possible purchase of Condis, valued at around 400 million euros including debt. Neither company has confirmed an agreement.
According to business-people.es, Carrefour is studying the acquisition of the Catalan supermarket chain Condis as part of its plan to grow in Catalonia and strengthen its proximity format. The operation is in the analysis phase and neither company has communicated the existence of an agreement.
Financial sources estimate the value of the chain at around 400 million euros, including debt. Carrefour has not commented on the information, so there is no confirmation regarding the progress of the discussions or their conditions.
The interest is part of the strategy that global CEO Alexandre Bompard has outlined for Spain, where the French group has already indicated it will resort to acquisitions to increase its market share.
Condis has around 740 establishments, mostly in Catalonia, and 75% are managed by franchisees. The chain has 248 supermarkets in Barcelona, surpassing 400 in the metropolitan area and maintaining about fifteen stores in Andorra.
In the province of Barcelona, Condis has a 25% share within proximity formats and small supermarkets. Across Catalonia, its market share by retail space is around 10%. Carrefour currently operates 212 establishments in Catalonia.
An eventual integration would allow Carrefour to grow immediately in that community and strengthen its presence in Barcelona neighbourhoods, where opening new stores from scratch takes longer. However, the weight of franchises would require a review of the network's operation and the conditions of each location.
Carrefour generated 8.833 billion euros in Spain during the first nine months of 2026, a 2.4% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The group's last major acquisition in the country was 40 Supercor supermarkets from El Corte Inglés at the end of 2023.
Condis was acquired at the end of 2021 by Portobello Capital and four executives from the chain, in a deal that valued the company at around 280 million euros. In 2025, it achieved an operating profit of 33.5 million euros, with stable sales around 810 million.
In August, its shareholders refinanced the company with 305 million euros granted by the British manager Hayfin, and part of those resources was used to distribute a dividend of nearly 100 million. Previous contacts with Carrefour did not progress due to price differences.
For now, the purchase is just a possibility being analysed by the French group. There is no public offer or announced contract, and if an agreement is reached, the operation would need to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals. In the meantime, Condis continues to operate normally.
