Heidelberg Volkswagen, Emalsa Gran Canaria, and Sayre CC La Ballena kick off the 2026-27 season this weekend. The first two have already tasted league title success, while the latter aims to reach the playoffs and the Copa de la Reina.
The Iberdrola League for women's volleyball returns this weekend with three representatives from Gran Canaria in the top tier: Heidelberg Volkswagen, Emalsa Gran Canaria, and Sayre CC La Ballena. Of these, two have lifted the league title in previous seasons: the students achieved it for the first and only time in the 2024-25 season, while the Olímpico has three titles to its name (2020-21, 2022-23, and 2023-24), as reported by La Provincia.
Sayre CC La Ballena, on the other hand, has yet to win the overall championship but will once again fight to make it into the playoffs and qualify for the Copa de la Reina.
Emalsa Gran Canaria opens the competition this Saturday at the Arena at 18:00 hours against Ocisa Haro Rioja. The team, led for the second consecutive year by Juan Diego García, has welcomed back Brazilian opposite Heloiza Pereira and signed Maguilaura Frías and Marga Pizá, while retaining Cuban Laura Suárez in the middle.
At the same time, but in Menorca, Heidelberg Volkswagen will face Avarca on one of the league's toughest courts. Leading the game will be Ale Del Burgo, returning to Spain, alongside Sulian Matienzo, the recovered Dayana Segovia, and newly signed Winderlys Medina.
Sayre CC La Ballena will close the opening day on Sunday at 12:00 hours at the Arena against Arenal Emevé. The team retains its libero Laura Juan and will feature the dynamic play of Wanda Banguero.
