Sonae Sierra has appointed Luís Mota Duarte as the new CEO. He will replace Fernando Guedes de Oliveira, who will leave the position in January 2027 after 16 years as CEO.

Sonae Sierra will renew its executive leadership in January 2027. The real estate company has named Luís Mota Duarte as the new CEO, succeeding Fernando Guedes de Oliveira, as reported by business-people.es.

Mota Duarte has been part of Sonae Sierra since 2018 and currently holds the position of Deputy CEO. Before joining the real estate firm, he arrived at the Sonae group in 2014 to lead the mergers and acquisitions division.

The transition will be prepared during the last months of 2026. Until then, Guedes de Oliveira will continue to lead the company and work alongside his successor on the transfer of executive functions, aiming to complete the transition smoothly.

Guedes de Oliveira has accumulated over 40 years at the Sonae group, 35 of which have been at Sonae Sierra, and took on the executive leadership of the real estate firm in 2010. During his 16 years as CEO, the company expanded its international presence and shifted from a shopping centre-focused model to a diversified real estate platform, with capabilities in investment management, development, and services.

“I feel immensely proud of the path we have built at Sonae Sierra,” Guedes de Oliveira stated.

The new CEO currently leads the Investment Management division, one of Sonae Sierra's core areas, and is an executive member of the board. Before joining the Portuguese group, he developed an international career in London for 14 years in venture capital, investment banking, and business development.

Mota Duarte is a visiting professor at Nova School of Business & Economics, has been an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, and holds an MBA from INSEAD.

With this appointment, the company is opting for an internal profile that knows the organization from within. The transfer of powers will be formalized in January 2027, when Mota Duarte will assume executive leadership.
