The provisional proposal from the Ministry for Digital Transformation allocates €17.5 million between Orange and Telefónica to bring 5G to 110 very rural municipalities.
According to bandaancha.eu, Orange and Telefónica have obtained nearly €17.5 million in public funding to expand their 5G SA mobile network in very rural areas. This figure appears in the provisional resolution proposal of the 5G Very Rural Networks programme, published by the Ministry for Digital Transformation.
The call was launched in July for operators to extend their most advanced coverage to areas with very few residents that still lack 4G or 5G. As a new feature, municipalities could offer operators public infrastructure, such as buildings or municipal plots, to facilitate installation.
Orange is the operator receiving the most funding. It will build 82 sites with an investment of €18.4 million, of which the funding will cover €12.2 million.
Movistar, Telefónica's brand, will establish 47 sites with an investment of €7.7 million and will receive €5.2 million in grants.
In total, the two operators will deploy 129 new sites in 110 small municipalities. The proposal includes localities from communities such as Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Canarias, Cantabria, and Castilla y León, among others. It is a provisional resolution, so the figures may vary until the final resolution.
