Minister Óscar López and Telefónica agree on strengthening European technological sovereignty without giving up an open economy. The meeting, held at the Telefónica Foundation Space, also brought together Iberdrola and Airbus.
The Policy Day that Telefónica held at the Telefónica Foundation Space focused on the challenges of European technological sovereignty. According to es.tradingview.com, the meeting analysed Europe's role in the global technological race and the conditions to enhance its competitiveness.
The event is part of the European technological sovereignty package and the upcoming regulations being prepared by the European Commission. The debate provided a platform for the business sector and the Administration to present their positions.
The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, and the Secretary General and Director of Public Affairs and Regulation at Telefónica, Pablo de Carvajal, agreed on the need to strengthen European technological sovereignty without renouncing an open economy or international collaboration. Both highlighted the necessity to gain scale, mobilise investment, and strengthen domestic capabilities in connectivity, artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and cybersecurity.
Afterwards, representatives from the European Round Table (ERT), Iberdrola, Airbus, and Telefónica discussed how technological sovereignty impacts specific business decisions. They called for strengthening digital and energy infrastructures, mobilising European funding, and reducing critical dependencies in data, semiconductors, and supply chains.
Additionally, companies requested simpler and more predictable regulations, greater agility in permits, and mechanisms that promote European technological capabilities. They also urged that companies be considered allies and strategic partners to enhance Europe's technological decision-making capacity.
