Honduras has expanded its temporary labour migration programme to Spain by 2,000 places for 2027, with around 3,400 workers expected. The places are mainly for the harvesting of red fruits and citrus in Huelva.

Honduras has added 2,000 additional places to the labour migration programme to Spain for 2027, as reported by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Fernando Puerto. The information, revealed by Infobae, estimates that around 3,400 Hondurans could participate next year.

The expansion was processed between the Honduran embassy in Spain and the Spanish embassy in Honduras, with the involvement of the Undersecretariat of Employment. The programme allows national workers to access temporary jobs in the Spanish agricultural sector.

The places are primarily allocated for the harvesting of red fruits and citrus in the province of Huelva, where the harvest campaign requires labour for several weeks each year.

In San Pedro Sula, the regional director of Labour, Wendy Molina, explained that eight Spanish companies are directly involved in the selection process. A total of 900 people who passed a preliminary phase have been called for interviews with representatives of the hiring companies.

Being called for an interview does not guarantee a contract. Hiring will depend on the outcome of each process, the availability of positions, and the fulfilment of requirements, and candidates must complete the selection and formalisation of the contract before travelling.

Contracts will last for between six and nine months, depending on the needs of each company and each agricultural season. The hiring companies will cover the costs of travel to Spain.

Puerto noted that the Collective Management of Hiring at Origin (GECCO) programme anticipates that workers will participate for a period of four years, with work stays of up to nine months per year. According to the minister, the return rates of Hondurans have reached between 98% and 99% in some years.

Labour authorities have requested that workers understand, before travelling, the terms of employment, the duration of their stay, and their labour rights. The programme operates with temporary contracts and a commitment to return at the end of the authorised period.
