Iva Mihaylova, accused in North Macedonia of a fatal accident, has crossed the border and is now in Bulgaria, where she will receive care at Pirogov hospital. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry did not participate in her departure and states that the State will continue to provide assistance.

The Bulgarian and Macedonian citizen Iva Mihaylova has arrived in Bulgaria to undergo the medical treatment she needs, after the authorities in North Macedonia imposed exit restrictions on her following the traffic accident that occurred on October 7, 2025 on the road between Kočani and Štip. According to bnrnews.bg, the young woman crossed the border accompanied by her lawyer.

One person died in the incident and several others were injured, including Mihaylova herself. The prosecution claims that she was driving at high speed and invaded the opposite lane, a claim that her defence disputes with expert reports. The judicial process against her remains open in North Macedonia.

"We crossed the border with my lawyer, my health deteriorated, he picked me up and we arrived in Bulgaria without any problems. I showed my Macedonian identity card and then showed the Bulgarian one at our border"

Mihaylova has stated to bTV that she feels safe in Bulgaria and that the trial will continue with or without her presence. The young woman claims that in North Macedonia she was oppressed because of her Bulgarian origin and that this was one of the reasons she was accused.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has clarified that it was not informed of the arrangements made by Mihaylova, her family, and her lawyer that led to her arrival in the country, and that it did not participate in its organisation. The institution emphasises that the most important thing now is for the young woman to receive the necessary medical assistance at the Pirogov emergency hospital, and confirms that the Bulgarian State will continue to provide assistance in the case within its competencies.

Medical care at the Pirogov hospital thus becomes the next immediate step for Mihaylova, while the judicial procedure in North Macedonia progresses in parallel.
