The President of the Government keeps the decision to dissolve Parliament open after Congress rejected the housing decrees. The PP demands that elections be called immediately.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, continues on Sunday with contacts with members of the Executive and the PSOE to decide whether to call early general elections or maintain the legislature, according to cronista.com. The discussions began after Congress rejected the two government decrees on housing on Friday.
The analysis of the situation has incorporated the demonstrations held over the weekend in various Spanish cities to demand solutions to the housing crisis. Government sources cited by EFE indicate that citizen reaction will be one of the elements Sánchez will consider before making a decision.
Within the PSOE, the majority position is in favour of dissolving Parliament and calling elections, although socialist sources believe that both scenarios remain open. The uncertainty could be resolved this Monday.
If Sánchez opts for the earliest possible date, he should announce the call on Monday so that the dissolution decree is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) the following day. From that publication, the 54 days stipulated by electoral legislation would start to count, which would place the election day on 29 November.
In the event of maintaining the legislature, one of the main uncertainties will be the Government's strategy to try to recover the housing measures rejected by Congress. Sánchez is scheduled to participate on Monday in Madrid in the inauguration of the Congress of the Institute of Family Business and has an international appointment in Split (Croatia) for the MED9 summit on Wednesday.
The political scenario has also led Sumar to call strategic meetings. The five ministers from the coalition and representatives of the parties that comprise it are meeting this Sunday to analyse the housing situation and the possible early elections. The meeting includes Yolanda Díaz, Pablo Bustinduy, Ernest Urtasun, Mónica García, and Sira Rego, along with representatives from Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid, Izquierda Unida, and the commons. A new in-person meeting is scheduled for Monday in Madrid.
Sources from the coalition consulted by EFE indicated that the meetings will focus on the political strategy in light of the new situation and ruled out that a decision on who would lead a potential Sumar candidacy would be made this Sunday.
For its part, the PP has increased pressure for Sánchez to announce an early election. The popular leader Miguel Tellado demanded on Sunday that the president call general elections and urged him not to prolong his period of reflection. He accused him of remaining “lying on the couch in Moncloa” ordering “hasty polls”.
“Pedro, don’t think about it anymore. Do it. Call the general elections tomorrow. Press the button”
Tellado assured that the PP is prepared for a potential early election. Sánchez's decision will be known, at the latest, this Monday.
