Daniela and José settled in Villegas, a Burgos village with 70 inhabitants, with a symbolic rent of 110 euros a month and the municipal bar at no cost.
According to La Vanguardia, the young people from Cádiz Daniela (22 years old) and José have been living in Villegas, a Burgos municipality of about 70 inhabitants, for a year and a half after leaving Sanlúcar de Barrameda. They previously paid around 600 euros a month for a small room in the city, with very long working hours.
Now they reside in a 100 square metre duplex for 110 euros a month. It is a symbolic social rent that the town hall offered them through the Proyecto Arraigo platform. The house is furnished with the basics, and the contract includes the concession of the municipal bar at no cost.
Daniela explains that in the bar they do not pay rent, electricity, or water, and that the profits are for them.
“In the bar we do not pay rent, electricity, or water. All the profits are entirely for us. Adding the bills for the house and groceries, we live as a couple for about 270 euros a month.”
According to their calculations, the couple lives on about 270 euros a month between the house bills and groceries.
The bar opens for about two hours at noon and a couple of hours in the evening, adjusted to the rhythm of the neighbours. Before starting, the town hall asked them for a minimum economic cushion and no criminal record, according to José, who had worked in hospitality for years.
For its part, the Youth Council of Spain points out that a young person in Spain needs to allocate nearly 100% of their net salary to rent a home alone.
