BBVA shares retreat around 5% in the early stages of the session, after the bank presented its accounts for the third quarter of 2026. According to xtb.com, the net profit reached €3.015 billion, a 19.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
The interest margin stood at €8.079 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 16.5% at constant exchange rates and 5.7% compared to the second quarter. The net commissions amounted to €2.337 billion, a 13.4% year-on-year increase, and the efficiency ratio fell to 37.9%, down from 38% the previous year.
Turkey accounted for 43% of the growth in the interest margin, with a year-on-year increase of 62.1%. In Spain, the increase was 2.3% and in Mexico it was 8.2%, according to data from the first nine months of the year.
The loan portfolio in Spain grew by 7.3% year-on-year, while the non-performing loan ratio fell to 2.6%, down from 2.9% a year ago. In contrast, the margin for clients, that is, the difference between what it charges for loans and what it pays for deposits, decreased in Spain, Mexico, Turkey, and Argentina.
The most significant factor in the market's reaction is the CET1 ratio, which fell by 44 basis points in just three months and remained below expectations. According to the analysis by XTB Spain, cited in the information, the decline is mainly due to risk-weighted assets, and its impact outweighs that of dividend and coupon payments, which accounted for 38 basis points. The ratio remains above the target of between 11.5% and 12%.
