The vehicle sales and repair sector generates around €110 billion and employs nearly 390,000 people. This is stated in a report by the IEE presented by GANVAM.

Vehicle sales and repairs in Spain generate around €110 billion, equivalent to about 7% of GDP, according to a preliminary report titled 'The Economy of the Vehicle Distribution Sector in Spain'. The information, reported by Posventa.com, also highlights that the sector employs nearly 390,000 people, an 18% increase since 2018.

The study was prepared by the Institute of Economic Studies (IEE), the research service of CEOE, at the request of the National Association of Vehicle Sellers and Repairers (GANVAM). It was presented at a press conference by its president, Jaime Barea, and the general director of the employers' association, Fernando Miguélez.

According to the report, 98% of companies in the sector are engaged in sales, maintenance, and repairs, and most are SMEs and self-employed individuals with a presence throughout the territory. Their direct contribution to the national Gross Value Added is 1.4%, in line with the European average.

IEE estimates indicate that each additional million euros of demand in this sector generates a total impact of €2.3 million on the economy and the equivalent of 17.6 full-time jobs, accounting for direct, indirect, and induced effects.

“With this report, we can quantify what the distribution sector contributes to the Spanish economy”

Jaime Barea added that the sector comprises around 70,000 companies. Regarding employment, by 2025, 93% of employees had permanent contracts, compared to 85% of the economy as a whole, and 93% worked full-time. Social Security affiliation reached a historic high of 358,300 affiliates in 2025. Productivity grew by 23% between 2019 and 2023.

The price of a new car, with applied discounts and taxes included, rose from about €21,000 in 2018 to nearly €29,000 in 2025, a 40% increase. During this period, the Special Tax on Certain Means of Transport increased by more than 60%, from €377 to €604 per vehicle. The estimated VAT per car rose by over €1,300, nearing €5,000.

With adjusted disposable income, cars over 15 years old account for 40% of transactions. The average age of the fleet increased from 9.2 years in 2010 to 14.6 years in 2025, and more than 62% of the nearly 37 million vehicles in circulation are over ten years old. Only 17.8% are less than four years old.

The full report will be unveiled at eXpo GANVAM 2026, which will be held on November 19 at IFEMA, Madrid, under the slogan 'In Good Hands'.
