OpenAI tests a merger of Chat and Work in the desktop app of ChatGPT, and ChatGPT and Codex will share the same token limit in paid plans.
According to ecosistemastartup.com, OpenAI has started testing a merger of the Chat and Work tabs in the desktop app of ChatGPT. The trial has been communicated via email to a small number of subscribers before a mass rollout, which does not yet have a date.
The most significant change for paying users is that ChatGPT and Codex will share the same token limit. Until now, each interface had its own, meaning an intensive programming session with Codex will consume from the same budget as chat queries.
In practice, the AI will decide which function is needed based on the query or task, rather than the user choosing the section. Codex will remain a separate experience within the app.
OpenAI explained the goal in its email to subscribers:
"This will allow you to go from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it out, all in one place."
According to ShiftDelete, the Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share this limit measured in tokens starting from December. Combined consumption and reset times can be reviewed in Settings, under the Usage section. Instant chat does not deduct from the limit and is listed as unlimited in paid plans, while advanced models and complex tasks consume more.
If the limit is exhausted, the user will have three options: wait for the reset, upgrade their plan, or purchase credits for enabled features. OpenAI maintains that most users will not notice the difference, although some may have to wait for resets more frequently.
The company has already adjusted this limit several times. According to tbreak, on August 25, it reinstated a cap of five hours for Work and Codex in the Plus plan, while Pro maintained unlimited access. According to ShiftDelete, on October 29, it doubled the limits for ChatGPT Pro.
The size of the shared limit is not known, nor whether the web and mobile versions will follow the same path.
