The Industry Commission of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid (COIIM) visited the Repsol Industrial Complex in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) this week for a technical day on production processes, technological advancements, and the circular economy.
The Industry Commission of the Official College of Industrial Engineers of Madrid (COIIM) visited the Repsol Industrial Complex in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) this week for a technical day focused on gaining firsthand knowledge of its production processes, technological advancements, and initiatives in the field of the circular economy, as reported by COIIM in a press release.
The visit was managed by Ignacio Sánchez-Lafuente, senior manager of Waste Procurement at Repsol and a member of the Industry Commission. The territorial director of the Ciudad Real delegation of COIIM, Ana Poblete, accompanied the Commission members on a day that highlighted Repsol's industrial potential in the province of Ciudad Real.
The day began with a technical presentation by Antonio Soto, coordinator of Industrial Transformation at Repsol, who provided attendees with an overview of the complex's activities and its industrial transformation processes. Subsequently, during a meeting, Antonio Lorenzo, director of the Repsol Industrial Complex in Puertollano, greeted the Commission members, led by Manuel Soriano, president of the COIIM Industry Commission, with whom he exchanged views on the activities and challenges of the industrial complex.
The tour included two notable facilities. At MHC, one of the key units of the refinery, the engineers learned about the process by which heavy fractions of oil are transformed using hydrogen, high pressures, and catalysts to obtain higher quality products.
The visit also allowed for an insight into Repsol's chemical recycling plant for polyurethane foam, launched as part of its circular economy strategy. In these facilities, waste primarily from mattresses, sofas, cushions, and vehicle seats is recovered, transforming it through chemical processes to facilitate its reuse as raw materials.
This meeting allowed members of the COIIM Industry Commission to deepen their understanding of technologies applied to industrial transformation and solutions that contribute to advancing towards more efficient and circular production models. It also fostered knowledge exchange between industrial engineering professionals and those responsible for one of the main industrial facilities in the province.
The COIIM is a public law corporation representing Industrial Engineers from Madrid, Ávila, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Toledo, Valladolid, and Zamora, as well as the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. It began its journey in 1950 with the aim of facilitating the continuous progress of the profession in relation to the needs of industrial engineering, in particular, and of companies and society, in general, ensuring good practices and compliance with ethics in the practice of the Industrial Engineer profession.
