The insurer Mutua Madrileña covers the 20 vehicles of the first autonomous car pilot by Uber and WeRide in Spain. The tests have been taking place in the capital since October.

The insurer Mutua Madrileña has insured the 20 vehicles of the first autonomous car pilot that Uber and WeRide have launched in Spain with the Community of Madrid. This is reported by Europa Press, based on a statement from the company itself.

The cars began to circulate in tests around the capital in October, with a safety operator onboard supervising the driving.

According to the insurer, participating in the project will allow it to gain firsthand knowledge of how these fleets operate and how risk evolves under real conditions. The data will be used to study which insurance models are best suited to autonomous vehicles.

“The main value of this pilot is that it will allow us to gain real experience to better understand how risk evolves and which insurance models will be most suitable for autonomous mobility,” said Jesús del Río, Deputy General Director of the Insurance Business at Mutua Madrileña.

The company indicates that autonomous driving will force car insurance to evolve as automation increases. As long as driver liability exists, traditional coverages will coexist with risks linked to software, connectivity, and driving systems.

In robotaxi fleets, the owner or operator of the fleet is likely to be the insured. The manufacturer, the provider of the driving system, or the platform may assume responsibilities depending on the origin of the incident.
