The Spanish Navy acquires the Ocean Marlin ship for €28.9 million, through the company Navaleva. The vessel, built in Spain in 2014, is to be delivered before April 2027.
The Spanish Navy has confirmed the purchase of the Ocean Marlin ship for €28.9 million, taxes included, according to mundodeportivo.com. The vessel is the third unit of a new generation of multipurpose ships that the institution is incorporating into its fleet.
The operation has been formalised through Navaleva, a Spanish company dedicated to the buying and selling of vessels. This company had previously been involved in other acquisitions for the Navy, such as the ships Carnota, Cartagena, and El Camino Español, all of which are second-hand.
The Ocean Marlin was built in 2014 by the Spanish shipyard Zamakona Yard and has the same design as the Carnota, which has already been incorporated into the fleet. Its delivery is expected before April 2027, according to documentation published on the State Contracting Platform.
The ship features a crane capable of lifting more than 35 tonnes and a cargo area exceeding 430 square metres. It will be able to transport heavy materials, tow vessels, supply other units, and participate in emergency operations, such as natural disasters.
The purchase is part of a plan to replace units that have been in service for decades. In 2023, the Navy acquired the Carnota, which allowed for the retirement of the Mahón; next came the Cartagena, in service since 2025, which replaced the Las Palmas, and that same year the Contramaestre Casado was retired. With the Ocean Marlin, the institution aims to prepare for the replacement of the veteran Mar Caribe and La Graña.
The new ships will be able to transport materials between the Peninsula, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and the Spanish territories in North Africa, in addition to strengthening support for operations by Spain, NATO, and the European Union.
