The Congress rejects two housing decrees from the Government. The PP celebrates it and Feijóo calls for early elections. Vox also supports the electoral advance.
The Congress of Deputies has rejected two housing decrees promoted by the Government, a vote that the Popular Party has celebrated and that has led its leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to demand early elections. According to diarioversionfinal.com, the leader of the PP stated in the plenary that "the only decent and democratic solution is the calling of elections."
Feijóo insisted that the elections should be held "whenever" the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, wants, adding that "nobody wants Pedro Sánchez this Christmas." The popular leader criticized the Executive for bringing a regulation to the Lower House that, in his opinion, does not address the real problems of citizens.
"Today no decree has been voted to help Maricarmen; an excuse has been brought here to try to help Pedro Sánchez"
The leader of the PP described the session as a "farce" and warned that the PSOE intends to apply in Spain a real estate model similar to that of Catalonia, where he said high rates of evictions and occupations are recorded. For Feijóo, the rejected legislation endangered young people and single-parent families in an already scarce and expensive market.
From Vox, its president, Santiago Abascal, also supported a possible electoral advance and stated that "the sooner the elections are, the better." Abascal accused Sánchez of "organising violence in the streets" and manipulating the housing crisis, linking the housing problem to the arrival of five million people in Spain in recent years.
The PP's Deputy Secretary General for Finance and Housing, Juan Bravo, has attacked the Government: "You cannot solve the problem because you are the problem." Bravo argued that the measures did not protect the most vulnerable tenants and defended that the solution lies in "increasing the supply" of housing instead of imposing restrictions.
The data that has focused the debate reflects the magnitude of the problem: the cost of buying a home has risen by 74% and rent by 45%, while the Bank of Spain estimates an accumulated deficit of 755,000 homes since 2021. The youth emancipation rate stands at 14.5%, forcing many young people to allocate almost all their income to rent.
Bravo addressed the citizens promising that one day they will be able to say "I am home," and reproached the Government for trying to resolve in days what, according to him, has deteriorated over eight years. In the same vein, Carlos Hernández Quero from Vox agreed that legal insecurity and lack of supply are at the root of the problem and urged the Executive to take responsibility and build more homes.
After the rejection of the decrees, the Government will have to decide whether to present the measures again through another parliamentary route or withdraw them. The PP and Vox maintain their demand for early elections, although the calling depends on Pedro Sánchez.
