The PP proposes to eliminate VAT on products like milk, oil, or meat to reduce the cost of the shopping basket, as defended in Granada by its congressional candidate.
In a market in the capital of Granada, Jorge Saavedra, the PP's congressional candidate for Granada, defended on Thursday, 5th November, applying a 0% VAT on basic foods. According to Europa Press, the measure is part of the plan of the party's national president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
The proposal includes milk, cheese, oil, eggs, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and canned goods. Saavedra linked the initiative to rising prices: according to the data he cited, the shopping basket has become 42% more expensive since Pedro Sánchez came to power, and inflation reached 4.9% in October.
Saavedra emphasised the need for families to be able to make ends meet with more peace of mind. In his words:
“Filling the shopping basket has become a concern for many families.”
The PP's plan also includes reducing the VAT on energy from 21% to 10% and doubling tax deductions for each child from August until the end of the year. Saavedra also called for support for producers, farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and small food businesses.
According to Saavedra, the reduction would mainly benefit families with lower incomes, the elderly, and those with children to support. He added that if Feijóo reaches the Presidency of the Government, the PP will work to make filling the shopping basket more affordable.
