GreenBioPeptides has patented a technique to extract bioactive ingredients from plant proteins. Its first extract, BPE-1, is aimed at cosmetics.

According to ecosistemastartup.com, the biotech company GreenBioPeptides, based in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona), has patented a technology to characterise and extract bioactive ingredients from plant proteins. The company has also filed applications to protect the obtained extracts, with cosmetics as the primary target market.

Its most advanced development is BPE-1, an extract from black beans that has a European patent application and its international extension through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Additionally, it has registered a second European application for extracts from various Mediterranean aromatic plants.

The company specifies that these are applications submitted and not granted patents, so the technology is in the process of protection. According to data provided by the company, it has already begun discussions with cosmetics brands and manufacturers to evaluate the extracts through co-development, licensing, and supply agreements.

The platform BPE Explorer, developed by the company itself, combines bioinformatics, artificial intelligence models, and physicochemical criteria to select peptides with industrial potential before validating them in the laboratory. As explained by founder and CEO Carolina de la Torre, this reduces blind testing, which is costly and slow.

According to the results communicated by the company, BPE-1 showed antioxidant activity, immune system regulation, and tissue regeneration in several cellular models. The plan includes expanding testing, studying the behaviour of the extracts, and moving towards larger-scale production, as well as exploring applications in food and nutritional supplements.

The company was founded in 2023 by Carolina de la Torre, a biologist and doctor in immunology, and by Àngel Riudalbas, specialised in business development. It received advice from the Intellectual Property area of ACCIÓ.
