Digital nomads and expatriates are settling in A Coruña attracted by its quality of life and the atmosphere generated by Inditex. Residency requires an income of around 2,700 euros.
According to La Opinión de A Coruña, the city attracts digital nomads and expatriates, qualified foreign professionals who work remotely for international companies or clients. Three of them, Carlos Esteves, Begoña Frigolet, and Nikolay, from different countries, met in the city and now consider it their home.
The British magazine Monocle describes A Coruña as a port city that combines a relaxed pace with an international business fabric. In its report, it coins the term Zarasmus to refer to the international atmosphere driven by Inditex that attracts professionals from other nationalities.
Among the drawbacks mentioned in the testimonies are the rising cost of housing, mobility issues, and the slowness of some procedures. To obtain the Digital Nomad Residency in Spain, one must demonstrate an income of around 2,700 euros.
Carlos Esteves, originally from Brazil, trained in sound engineering and settled in San Francisco in 2019. He then worked as a freelancer in sound system consulting for venues under construction, with foreign clients. Just over a year ago, he moved to A Coruña with his wife, Ellen, and their dog, Benji.
Esteves recounts that they arrived without knowing anyone and that the sea and climate influenced their choice. His wife is from San Francisco, where the climate is similar to that of Galicia.
“We came without knowing anyone”
When asked if the city is a transitional stage, he replies that it is not.
“No, no, A Coruña is our home now. Our plan is to stay here permanently”
Begoña Frigolet also highlights the city.
“A Coruña is a very good city, it is a hidden treasure”
