SMEs and self-employed individuals have access to state and European aids for digitalization and innovation. They must be up to date with the tax office and social security and respect the minimis limit.

Spanish SMEs and self-employed individuals have access to state and European public aids for digitalization, innovation, internationalization, and energy transition. According to TerritorioFintech, these programs aim to align the companies' strategies with national priorities such as digitalization and ecological transition.

To take advantage of them, the company must adjust its project to the objectives of each call, meet the eligibility criteria, and submit the documentation without errors. Marta Grañó, a professor of Leadership and Innovation at OBS Business School, points out that good forecasting helps avoid cash flow tensions and possible incompatibilities between aids.

The aids are grouped into four areas. In digitalization, the Digital Kit stands out, which grants vouchers for e-commerce, cybersecurity, management, and artificial intelligence. In R&D+i, the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) manages Science and Innovation Missions, aimed at large collaborative projects, and Neotec, for tech startups in their initial phases.

In internationalization, ICEX Next offers specialized advice and financial support for expanding outside Spain. In energy transition, there are lines for sustainable mobility and for acquiring electric vehicles through renting or leasing, both for companies and self-employed individuals.

To access any of them, one must be up to date with obligations to Hacienda and Social Security. Additionally, the minimis regime applies, which sets a general limit on accumulated aids over three fiscal years.

Among the most common obstacles are fitting the project into the call, having the administrative capacity to process the technical and economic documentation, and planning cash flow to cover co-financing and the deadlines for justifying expenses.
