The executive president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, has received the distinction of Honorary Member from the Madrid Association of Economists. The event took place at the Paraninfo of the Complutense University.

According to El Periódico Extremadura, Ignacio Galán, executive president of Iberdrola, has been named Honorary Member of the Madrid Association of Economists for his business career and contribution to the growth of the electric company. The distinction was awarded this Tuesday at the Paraninfo of the Complutense University of Madrid.

The event was presided over by Amelia Pérez Zabaleta, dean-president of the Association, and the laudatio was delivered by Pablo Hernández de Cos, general director of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and former governor of the Bank of Spain. Hernández de Cos highlighted Galán's foresight, who, at the helm of Iberdrola for 25 years, bet on electrification:

“He saw that electrification was going to play a very relevant role in the economy and knew how to turn that vision into investment and value creation”

During his speech, Galán defended electrification as an opportunity for economic transformation in Europe. According to his estimate, the continent will need more than 200 billion euros annually over the next decade, of which around half will need to be allocated to electrical networks.

The president of Iberdrola announced that the company is considering investments of up to 80 billion euros in the next five years, which could raise its net profit to 10 billion euros. Iberdrola will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2026, with assets valued at 165 billion euros and a market capitalization of 150 billion.

With this appointment, Galán joins a list of economic figures who have received this distinction, including Enrique Fuentes Quintana, Juan Velarde, Isidoro Álvarez, and César Alierta.
