If you are self-employed or run a small business and need money to buy machinery, renovate your premises, or cover a cash flow gap, ICO loans for self-employed and SMEs deserve a spot on your list before calling your bank. The Official Credit Institute designs the lines, but in most cases, the application is submitted to the credit institution, which studies each case and sets the final conditions.

These lines are intended to finance investment projects, business activities, and liquidity needs or expenses. Within the catalogue, there is also a specific section for digitalisation projects, with special attention to teleworking solutions included in the Acelera Pyme programme, and another for the rehabilitation of homes and buildings. This means the range is broader than many small business owners imagine when thinking of traditional credit.

What Amount Can Be Requested

The maximum amount is calculated per client and can reach covering 100% of the funding needs. This means that if the project fits within the line and the institution approves it, it is not mandatory to provide own funds for the total investment. Nevertheless, each bank assesses the applicant's solvency, their history, and the viability of the business plan, so it is advisable to arrive with accounts up to date and a detailed budget.

The operations allow for various modalities: loan, leasing, renting, and credit line. The loan is the most common formula when there is a specific investment, such as a van or computer equipment. Leasing and renting are useful if what is needed is to use an asset without buying it outright, and the credit line fits better with liquidity problems that arise recurrently, for example, when payments arrive in 60 or 90 days.

Terms and Interest Rates

The repayment term ranges from 1 to 20 years, and the line allows for up to 3 years of principal deferral. During this period, only interest is paid, which eases the payment while the project starts generating income. It is important to keep in mind that the deferral does not eliminate the cost of money: interest continues to accrue and increases the total cost of the operation.

As for the interest rate, it can be fixed or variable, and in both cases, the margin set by the credit institution according to the chosen term is added. Therefore, there is no single percentage applicable to all applicants. The maximum APR can be found in the documentation for each line, and it is the figure that should be compared between banks before signing, because two offers with the same nominal rate can have very different costs if the fees change.

Who Can Apply

ICO Lines are designed for self-employed individuals, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and companies in general. Within the offer, there are national lines aimed at financing activities and investment projects in Spain, and international lines aimed at internationalising the company or financing export activities. If your business sells outside our borders, it is worth reviewing this second option before resorting to other products.

For companies seeking a more agile route, the ICO has launched ICO Crecimiento, a direct and fully digital financing tool designed for Spanish SMEs. It allows financing for business activities and investment to grow and expand without going through the entire in-person processing of an office. There are also guarantee lines managed by the ICO to facilitate access to credit for self-employed individuals and SMEs, a nuance that sometimes goes unnoticed but can make a difference when the business has little history or few guarantees.

How to Apply and Where to Get Information

The first step is to identify the line that best fits the project. The ICO portal has a product search engine that compares available solutions according to the purpose of the financing. Once chosen, the application is processed at the credit institution, and collaborating agents can assist in the process if one does not have experience with this type of operation.

Anyone with questions about features or processing methods can call the ICO's free information line at 900 121 121. The ICO fact sheet for companies and entrepreneurs is also available in PDF format, summarising the conditions of each line. The validity of the described conditions corresponds to the year 2026, so it is advisable to review the official information before submitting the application, as the lines may be updated during the year.

In practice, the decision usually comes down to three simple questions: how much money do you need, how long can you repay it, and what will the total cost of the operation be once interest and fees are added. If the answers match, ICO loans are an alternative that deserves serious comparison against conventional bank financing.
