Caprabo now accepts in-person payments with Bizum, and Grupo Eroski will extend the service to its supermarkets. In this first phase, it does not include Forum Sport or the group's petrol stations.
Grupo Eroski has started accepting in-person payments with Bizum in its stores. Caprabo, the Catalan chain under the same parent company, already has it operational in its supermarkets and digital channel. The information, reported by Ecosistema Startup, places the Basque cooperative on the same level as Mercadona, Carrefour, Alcampo, and Lidl, which have allowed mobile payments at checkout for months.
In the rest of the Grupo Eroski network, the service will be rolled out gradually. The extension to the Peninsula and Balearic Islands will depend on the availability of in-person Bizum at each banking institution.
In this first phase, the service is limited to the food business. It does not include Forum Sport or the group's petrol stations. The payment is integrated into the usual checkout process, with no changes to staff operations: it is the customer who chooses the digital payment method. According to available information, in most cases, there will be no need to change the payment terminal.
According to La Voz del Sur, the announcement was made on Tuesday, October 20. The company's director of innovation and technology, Enrique Monzonis, stated:
The shopping and payment habits are evolving rapidly, and our goal is to accompany our customers in that transformation.
The same outlet indicates that the cooperative allocated 21.14 million euros to innovation in 2025, a 35% increase from the previous year, and plans to invest over 100 million euros in technological transformation between 2024 and 2026.
In the case of Caprabo, Economía Digital reports the comments of its commercial and marketing director, Daniel Ledesma, who links the decision to the growing demand for digital payment solutions:
Digital payment solutions that are fast and secure.
The chain, founded in Barcelona in 1959, operates around 300 supermarkets across the four Catalan provinces and in Andorra. According to cited data, more than 100,000 people shop daily at its stores, and it has 800,000 regular customers of its Club Card.
Unlike Google Pay or Apple Pay, Bizum does not require linking a physical card. The charge is made against the bank account through immediate transfers between accounts, although payment can also be made with a card. In practice, the user activates the app, brings the mobile close to the payment terminal, and pays via NFC.
As explained by El Correo, Bizum operates on immediate account-to-account payments, while card transactions go through international networks. This provides Spanish banking with its own alternative for everyday payments.
Lidl began testing payments with Bizum in 2023. According to Expansión, Inditex, Ikea, Carrefour, Alcampo, and Burger King have also opened the door to Bizum Pay. The same newspaper reports that Mercadona is preparing for a full rollout after a pilot in Soria, and that El Corte Inglés is also gearing up. TerritorioFintech confirms that Mercadona began the rollout in its network in October 2026, still without complete coverage.
The platform's figures vary depending on the cutoff date. Recently, the platform reported that in-person payment was available for 60% of its users, around 20 million people, and accepted by 1.6 million establishments, approximately 75% of banking terminals. TerritorioFintech, citing data at the end of the third quarter of 2026, raises the figure to 21 million enabled users.
