The National Commission of Markets and Competition has approved in the first phase Iberdrola's purchase of the electricity marketing business of Contigo Energía, which has around 100,000 clients.

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has authorised in the first phase Iberdrola's purchase of the electricity marketing business of Contigo Energía in Spain, through which the utility will incorporate a portfolio of 100,000 clients. According to diariosigloxxi.com, the notification was submitted on 22 September and the operation was approved on 20 October, via the fast track and without conditions.

This is Iberdrola's first acquisition of a marketing company in Spain. The company frames it within its strategy for commercial growth in the domestic market, which it considers key to accelerating the electrification of homes and businesses.

After the closure, Contigo Energía will continue to operate independently within the group, just like Niba, a brand launched in June 2025. The operation does not include representation activities.

Contigo Energía was born as a subsidiary of Gesternova Energía, created in 2017 to offer energy services. Gesternova was founded in 2005 with a focus on renewable electricity, and in October 2024 both brands were commercially integrated under the name of Contigo Energía.

The company highlights that more than 70% of its clients in the free market have long-term contracts with fixed prices that allow them to know in advance the cost of energy over extended periods.

According to CNMC data at the end of September 2025, the electricity market had about 30.6 million supply points, of which 22.4 million (73.2%) corresponded to free marketers.

Iberdrola was already the leading group in the market, with nearly 9.8 million supply points, ahead of Endesa, with over 9 million, and Naturgy, with almost 4.4 million. Repsol, according to the same regulator, has been gaining market share in electricity supply at the expense of these three major operators.
