The Junta de Extremadura will reduce the eco-tax paid by electricity companies operating in Almaraz starting in 2027. The accumulated loss in revenue will reach 177.9 million by 2029.

The Junta de Extremadura will lower the eco-tax paid by the major energy companies operating in the region starting in 2027, with a 30% discount on the fee. This is reported by elDiario.es in the information regarding the debate on the total amendment presented by the PSOE to the regional budget project.

The Minister of Finance, Elena Manzano, justified the cut by citing the "absolute desperation of the electricity companies" in light of the tax burden from the central government. According to her data, the tax reduction is the only way to force the extension of the Almaraz nuclear power plant and protect around 4,000 jobs. The owners of the plant are Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy.

The socialist group rejected this argument. Its spokesperson, Isabel Gil Rosiña, mocked the economic situation of the electricity companies and urged the minister not to "get carried away":

"Goodness, those who earn 10 billion euros a year must take tranquilizers to sleep."

Gil Rosiña placed the historical revenue from the eco-tax at around 100 million euros annually. According to the PSOE, the tax was already upheld by the courts following the legal battles of the governments of Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra and Guillermo Fernández Vara.

The regional accounts estimate an accumulated loss of revenue of 177.9 million euros by 2029. The potential revenue base is 93.6 million per year, and in 2027, the 30% discount will mean 28.1 million less for public coffers. The minister linked the abolition of the tax for nuclear facilities in 2029 to the central government reducing taxation on electricity companies beforehand.
